Hans Huitink

Upon completion of his medical study at the VU University Medical Center in 1995 Johannes Huitink obtained a PhD in cardiology at the same medical center in the same year. He completed his anesthesiology training at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam in 2001. In 2001 he became staff anesthesiologist at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the Netherlands Cancer Institute – Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital in Amsterdam, where he specialized in cancer anesthesia. There he combined clinical work in the operating rooms and intensive care unit with clinical and translational research. In 2007 he moved to Australia to work as a consultant at the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine of Western Health in Melbourne. In 2008 he joined the staff of the Department of Anesthesiology at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, where he currently works and combines clinical work with teaching and research. Dr Huitink has published many papers and is author or co-author of medical books within his fields of interest. He is an expert in difficult airway management, neuroanesthesia including asleep-awake-asleep procedures, high fidelity medical simulation, air medical patient transportation and anesthesia for cancer patients. He is course director, instructor and guest faculty for several national and international advanced airway management courses. He is principal investigator of the airway management research group at VUmc with the aim to develop innovation in that field . He is founder of the Airway Management Academy.
